Sea Kayaking Johnstone Strait
Located near the northern end of beautiful Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Johnstone Strait and surrounding areas are a sea kayaker’s dream. Separating Vancouver Island from the mainland archipelago, this narrow passage funnels the Pacific Ocean through its depths, creating an unparreled concentration of marine life.
The very richness of the waters in this area results in an abundance of wildlife. The salmon annually migrate through these channels, and other wildlife follows. On our trips we regularly see Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, Stellar Sea Lions, Harbour Seals, Bald Eagles, Black Tailed Deer, Black Bear and amazing birding. This incredible ecosystem also supports an amazing array of inter-tidal life, best viewed from a kayak.
Additionally, this area is one of the most consistent places in the world to view Orcas – or Killer Whales, as they are also called. The resident (fish eating) population that returns each year following the salmon has over 200 individuals. While we don’t make any guarantees on what we will see, we have a record of over 95% for Orca sightings on our 4 & 6 days trips.
Whether you’re looking for an expeditionary style trip, interested in bringing your family along, or are more into our comfortable base camp, we have a trip for everyone.
- Orca Waters Base Camp - 4 days
- Family Orca Waters Base Camp - 4 days
- Orca Waters Explorer - 6 days
- Orca Waters Day Trip - 1 day
- Orca Waters B&B - 3 or 4 days
Also in the area is the renowned Robson Bight Conservation area, home of the famous ‘rubbing beaches’ where the Orcas rub on the extensive gravel beaches. Numerous marine mammal scientists focus their research in this area, including the famous ‘Orca Lab’ known for their passive acoustical research techniques.
Johnstone Strait is also home of rich First Nations heritage, and as we travel their traditional waterways, we’ll find signs of their presence – culturally modified trees, canoe runs, seasonal village sites, and some trips even visit an ancient village site.
