Sea Kayaking Gwaii Haanas National Park - Tanu to Burnaby Island Tour Details
Below is a sample itinerary and exact routes will vary depending on possible wildlife sightings, currents, tides and weather.
Day 0:
Plan to be in Sandspit the night before your trip departs. This will give you a chance to meet our staff, pack your dry bags, organize your gear, and buy any last minute items. Meals Included: None
Day 1:
You will be picked up at your accommodation at approximately 7:30 AM for transport to your departure point. Depending on the trip, numbers, and weather, your transport to the field will either be by open zodiac or floatplane.
Upon arrival at the remote campsite, you’ll meet your guides who will provide you with a safety briefing and an orientation to the National Park. You’ll then have a chance to try out your kayaks for the first time, exploring the area close to camp. Depending on the trip, we may either stay at this spot for the first night, or move on to another camp in the afternoon. Meals Included: Lunch - Dinner
Days 2 to 7:
This trip starts at the northern end of the park and slowly traverses south along the eastern coast of Moresby Island, slowly exploring the islands as we travel. You’ll travel south through Darwin Sound, crossing Juan Perez Sound to Hotspring Island, where we’ll stop for a visit and soak in the hot thermal pools.
Continuing on, we aim for Burnaby Island, with a possible visit to Burnaby Narrows, known for its rich concentration of intertidal life. Highlights also include a stop at the abandoned Haida village of Tanu.
The actual route will depend much on the weather, sea conditions, and abilities of the group, but while each trip is unique, we like to think all are spectacular. Meals Included: Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner
Day 8:
On the last day of the trip, you’ll have time to reminisce about the previous days over a leisurely breakfast. Your transportation generally arrives about midday and whisks you back to Sandspit where you’ll have the opportunity to get together with the rest of your group for a farewell dinner. Meals Included: Breakfast – Lunch
What to expect on our Gwaii Haanas kayak tours:
On our Gwaii Haanas trips we supply a mixed kayak fleet of singles and doubles, and each guest will have an opportunity to try both. Our groups are kept small; there is a maximum group size of 8 guests with 2 guides accompanying..
For our Gwaii Haanas trips, previous paddling experience is recommended, or at least camping skills and a sense of adventure! We usually paddle for 4 – 5 hours per day, with breaks for lunch, snacks and shore exploration. Campsites are changed each day as our tours are ‘nomadic’ and we rarely stay in one spot for long. Occasionally, due to weather or sea conditions, we may not be able to paddle or move camp; we generally take advantage of this as a ‘rest’ day and explore the rainforest and nearby surroundings.
Transportation methods can vary from trip to trip. Depending on group size, weather, and logistical requirements we may use either a high speed open zodiac or floatplane. Either way, you’ll have an opportunity to view the islands of Haida Gwaii from a unique vantage point.
What is provided on all of our tours:
We provide you will all the necessary kayaking and camping equipment, including: kayaks, paddling jacket, life jacket, group shelters, tents, sleeping pads, camp chairs and with enough notice, we can even provide sleeping bags, although most guests prefer to bring their own. A comprehensive list of required personal items can be viewed here.
All meals from lunch on the first day to lunch on the last day are provided and prepared. We’re proud of our menu that includes abundant fresh fruits and vegetables, a wide variety of international dishes, and freshly baked treats. Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated given sufficient prior notification.
Transportation is all-inclusive from your accommodations in Sandspit. Our network of vans and water taxis will transport you to and from your journey in comfort.
What is not included on our tours:
We do not provide transport from your home to Sandspit, airport transfers, or accommodations in Sandspit. Any meals outside the kayak portion of the tour are your responsibility. Travel insurance for accidents or emergency evacuation is not provided; we recommend you purchase a policy before leaving home. The trip price does not include guide gratuities; should you feel that the service was exemplary, it is always appreciated. We suggest 5 –10% of the trip cost, based on the service and attention provided.
